International trade is organized by country to (export) and from (import) 6
major world regions and the world. Trade data is mainly based on importing
country reporting for the major industrialized nations and on reciprocal
trade for many of the emerging and developing countries. National source
data has also been collected. Trade forecasts are based on the latest
available data from the US, Eurostat, and the UN. Unlike production data,
however, trade data is complete and does not depend upon filling in missing
data or correcting defintions. Trade is organized at its most detailed level
into a matrix of 92 countries and regions with 92 countries and regions by
80 commodities. |
Data Source: United States Department of Commerce Data, Eurostat data (15,
eventually 25 countries), UN Trade Data (all other countries). US and
Eurostat data is used for bi-direcitonal flows with other nations, while
national source data from the UN is used for all other countries trade with
all other countries. |
Forecasting Methods: Trade models are based on a
pooled-cross-sectional-time-series methodology linked to estimates of market
demand (intermediate and final demand) and relative import prices (commodity
prices and cross-exchange rates with exporting reigons/countries). Models
are based on a demand pull (importing countries) with 92 potential exporting
countries or regions. Econometric models are by commodity group and by
export region. |
Applications: International trade databases -- both at
the aggregate level and also showing detailed route-by-route forecasts have
been used extensively to forecas global transportation flows. On request
more detailed, route-by-route databases are available in terms of real value
and also maritime volume and air freight volume flows. Commodity specific
forecasts for individual import markets can also be helpful when companies
are assessing the best approach to selling in a distant market (export sales
or local operations). |

Trade data commdoties are consistent with ISIC Industry Groups (traded goods
only) with some additional detail. |
